“Today is the tommorow that we worried about yesterday”

Examples of Propaganda (Class Assignment)

An example of Name Calling which attaches negative names or symbols to an opponent.

An example of Logical Fallacies, which is jumping to a bizarre conclusion.

This below is an example of a testimonial (endorsement from a famous person). Paris Hilton is always with her Blackberry now…

This is just sort of a randomn funny one I found!

The Wave: Dissect a quote

“The past is never dead, it’s not even past”

  1. To me, this quote means that the past is never dead, there will always be a past. The past was a future, and the future will be a past.
  2. This quote connects to the group The Wave in the book The Wave in the sense that the group The Wave is the same as the Nazis in Germany. The past has repeated itself, and therefore it is not dead.
  3. This quote connects to American history because Adolf Hitler was a tyrant, and the teacher who starts The Wave and the students who participated in The Wave movement were similar to tyrants, thinking they were all equals but bullying and harrassing kids who didn’t want to join their cause. The Kings of Great Britain were tyrants too, in the time of the 13 colonies, prosecuting those who didn’t support them or believe in the same cause.

The Wave: Dissect a quote

“The past is never dead, it is not even past”

  1.  To me, this quote means that there is always going to be a past… this is rather hard to explain. For example, the future is not a past, and there will always be a future for everything, so really, a past at one point was a future. Sigh, this is very difficult.
  2. This quote connects to the group The Wave in the sense that The Wave is just like the Nazis were. So the past is reliving itself, the whole power idea has not died.
  3. This connects to American history because the Kings of Great Britain, in the times of the 13 colonies wanted to expand their land and their power. They tried taking away the Native American land and in turn, the Native Americans fought back. The British tyrants also wanted the land of the Spanish and French.

The Wave Journal Entry 01

This was done on one of the days Mr. R was absent… Mrs. D put up these questions on the board for us to answer. We are currently reading The Wave, by Todd Strasser.

 1. David tries to convince Laurie to forget the events that took place in Nazi Germany.

“Forget about it. It happened once and the world learned its lesson. It’ll never happen again.”

 Do you agree?

No, I don’t agree. From what humanity has shown us, humans make the same mistakes over and over again. I think the reason schools even educate children on history is so they can learn what mistakes their predecessors made and not make the same mistake, therefore saving valuable resources and time. However, humans seem to make the same mistakes over and over again. We have roamed this earth thousands of years, yet violence, poverty, and greed is still among us. People still die because of one person’s ignorance. I believe that things like what the Nazis have done will continue, perhaps not on such a large scale, but large nevertheless.

Should we try to forget evil events and trust in the goodness of human nature?

This picture can be found here

No, I don’t think we should forget about evil events. So many people suffered. I think we should not forget these events because we have to try our best to make sure such suffering never happens again. It’s probably inevitable, but at least we can try. No human is completely good or completely evil. I think there is goodness in everything and everybody, it’s just that some people’s goodness are hidden deeper. We cannot trust in human goodness as you never know when the bad will take over the good. I think of a big fruit blender. Good is white, and evil is black. The density of each color changes all the time, so sometimes good is on top of evil and vice versa.

Is evil an outside force, or are we all capable of evil acts?

No, evil is definitely not an outside force. You just have to open your eyes to see the horrible things  happening around us. There is still child labor, prostitution,  workers barely making a living, animal cruelty, wars and so much more. These things have been going on since the beginning of humanity. As I said earlier, I believe that there is good and evil in everyone. If you are given any power whatsoever, you are capable of evil acts, and everyone has power over something.

If Everyone Cared– Nickelback

Another very inspiring song by Nickelback. It shows instead of caring only about yourself, if everyone cared about everyone else, then the world would be so much better– there would be less killing, less pollution and more (I know thisi sounds corny), love. Everything and everyone is connected to each other, everything about nature is connected to humans. The ocean affects  us and we affect the ocean, and so on.

“If Everyone Cared”

From underneath the trees, we watch the sky

Confusing stars for satellites

I never dreamed that you’d be mine

But here we are, we’re here tonight

Singing Amen, I, I’m alive

Singing Amen, I, I’m alive

[Chorus:]

If everyone cared and nobody cried

If everyone loved and nobody lied

If everyone shared and swallowed their pride

Then we’d see the day when nobody died

And I’m singing

Amen I, Amen I, I’m alive

Amen I, Amen I, Amen I, I’m alive

And in the air the fireflies

Our only light in paradise

We’ll show the world they were wrong

And teach them all to sing along

Singing Amen, I, I’m alive

Singing Amen, I, I’m alive

(I’m alive)

[Chorus x2]

And as we lie beneath the stars

We realize how small we are

If they could love like you and me

Imagine what the world could be

If everyone cared and nobody cried

If everyone loved and nobody lied

If everyone shared and swallowed their pride

Then we’d see the day when nobody died

When nobody died…

[Chorus]

We’d see the day, we’d see the day

When nobody died

We’d see the day, we’d see the day

When nobody died

We’d see the day when nobody died

Hero– Nickelback

This is one  off my favorite songs… I like it so much because it shows how much violence this world has. It shows that if you really want to, you can change the world.

Hero

Nickelback

I’m so high. I can hear heaven.

I’m so high. I can hear heaven.

Oh but heaven, no heaven don’t hear me.

And they say that a hero could save us.

I’m not gonna stand here and wait.

I’ll hold on to the wings of the eagles.

Watch as we all fly away.

Someone told me that love would all save us.

But how can that be, look what love gave us.

A world full of killing, n’ blood-spilling

that world never came.

And they say that a hero could save us.

I’m not gonna stand here and wait.

I’ll hold on to the wings of the eagles.

Watch as we all fly away. hi-igh-igh!

Now that the world isn’t ending,

it’s love that I’m sending to you.

It isn’t the love of a hero,

and that’s why I fear it won’t do.

And they say that a hero could save us.

I’m not gonna stand here and wait.

I’ll hold on to the wings of the eagles.

Watch as we all fly away.

And they’re watching us

(Watching Us)

They’re watching us

(Watching Us)

as we all fly away.

And they’re watching us

(Watching us)

They’re watching us

(Watching us)

As we all fly away,

(Yeah)

Yeah.

And they’re watching us

(Watching us)

They’re watching us

(Watching us)

As we all fly away

(Yeah, yeah. Whoa-oh.)

A Whole New World

Check out this singer. I think it’s pretty cool how he sings A Whole New World from Aladdin as both Jasmine and Aladdin! Wish I could do that :) .

The Moon

The Moon

You can take the moon by the spoonful
or in capsules every two hours.
It’s useful as a hypnotic and sedative
and besides it relieves
those who have had too much philosophy.
A piece of moon in your purse
works better than a rabbit’s foot.
Helps you find a lover
or get rich without anyone knowing,
and it staves off doctors and clinics.
You can give it to children like candy
when they’ve not gone to sleep,
and a few drops of moon in the eyes of the old
helps them to die in peace. Put a new leaf of moon
under your pillow
and you’ll see what you want to.
Always carry a little bottle of air of the moon
to keep you from drowning.
Give the key to the moon
to prisoners and the disappointed.
For those who are sentenced to death
and for those who are sentenced to life
there is no better tonic than the moon
in precise and regular doses.

Jaime Sabines

I really like the moon too. There is something mysterious yet serene about the moon. I like to think that everywhere I go, the moon will always be there, ever unchanging. The moon seems to see everything we do right and everything we do wrong, yet it never judges us.

This Week in Class 1

I learned about: power, and exactly what I think about it (see post “Power” for more details). I learned about Google Reader and how to improve my poem editing and sustainability. I also learned more about blogging.

I learnt that: competition for economic growth causes the enviromnment and people to suffer, and that the current economic system is unsustainable. UNICEF reported that 23 percent of kids like school a lot at a young age but the older they get, the less they enjoy school. I also learnt that people are educated that their well being does not affect the envirnoment or other people, but it does. In the 21st century we cannot keep learning how to consume. Many students today just listen to their teachers talking and do handouts but they don’t actually learn anything. Also, I learnt that power is the ability to control, or change something or someone, or influence them. Everyone or anything has power over something else. Power exists in everything (friends, relationships, everday life, school, animals etc). During class, we realized in all animal kingdoms EXCEPT mammals, females are the alphas and hold power over the males.

Power

Mr R. asked us during L.A class to free write about the statement below:

The statement is: ‘Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.’

I think this statement is true to a certain extent. For example, people have power over their servants (nannies, cleaners, drivers, etc). Even at the age of 13, my peers and I exert power over them. We could tell them or ask them to do something, but if they refuse or are impolite to us, they face consequences that us, or probably our parents will imply. If they steal something or don’t seem to be doing their work properly, the people who hired them have the right to send them back to their countries.

I think that power can be used fairly, or badly. An example of badly used power is, say a single man has a maid. He has power over her because he brought her into the country and he pays her. The man might take away her passport, beat her, or treat her in other unfair ways, and she can’t do anything about it, because the man is physically stronger than her, and exerts power over her. Power can be dangerous– it can corrupt you and turn you into something other than you used to be or never imagined yourself as (for example cruel). But, if used properly, it can be used to change the world and help animals and humans.

With the statement ‘absolute power corrupts absolutely’, I completely agree with. This is the reason why I don’t agree with monarchy. Unless you are an angel, if you are given so much power it will turn you bad. People who have too much power would be very hard to stop, simply because he is at the top of the power scale. Examples are the Kings of Great Britain during the time of the British colonies. These Kings did not listen to their people or their governments. It took all the 13 colonies together witht he help of many allies to rid themselves of the tyrant Kings and set up their own country and government. Many lives were lost in the process because of one person’s power.

My Power Scale

1 (top) Government/Monarchy

2) Parent/Teacher

3) Me

4) Maid, driver, etc.

5) My pet cat

6) Laborers

(This is just what I think… it’s probably not right though )
